Cellist Jonathan Swensen has been announced as the first-ever recipient of the Olesen Music Award, a new biennial prize established by the Erik & Susanna Olesen Charitable Foundation to recognize exceptional early-career classical musicians whose artistry and international outlook are shaping the future of the genre.
As the inaugural laureate, Jonathan receives a cash prize of DKK 500,000 (approximately $78,000), along with a networking package connecting him with concert halls and orchestras across the Nordic region — support intended to expand his reputation and open further performance opportunities in the years ahead.
Stine Hasbirk, chair of the Olesen Music Award, violist, and member of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, praised Jonathan's artistry, noting that his technical freedom always serves the music rather than the other way around.
The award adds to a string of recent distinctions for Jonathan, who won joint First Prize at the 2024 Naumburg International Cello Competition and received the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2022.
